Refuge Over Riches

Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.” I say of the holy people who are in the land, “They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.” Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more. I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods or take up their names on my lips. LORD, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure.
The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance
. Psalm 16:1-6

In case you haven’t noticed, the financial markets have been chaotic lately, with big swings back and forth. That can be stressful—especially for those nearing retirement. During times of volatility, many investors look for what’s known as a “safe haven”—an investment that carries less risk and might even gain value during economic hardship.

Now, I’m not here to offer investment advice—that’s not my area of expertise. But I do believe David offers us a spiritual lens through which we can view the inevitable challenges of life. He reminds us of our true “safe haven”; it is in the Lord. “Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge.” (Psalm 16:1)

David knew what it meant to face crisis. He stood up to a giant, navigated political intrigue with Saul, and wrestled with the consequences of his own sin. He valued wise counsel and practical action, but ultimately, his security was rooted in his relationship with God. He reminds us that the Lord watches over those who listen for His voice and walk by faith. Conversely, those who chase after other gods will find only sorrow.

In this week following the celebration of the resurrection, let us remember that we follow Jesus—the One who overcame a world filled with chaos, violence, and the false gods of the Roman Empire. No matter what may come, He alone is our portion and our cup, and He is the One who makes us eternally secure.

Though we desire financial security, may we place our deepest trust in God’s providence—and never forget that our ultimate inheritance rests in the hands that were nailed to a cross.

For Reflection

  • What is a challenge you’re currently facing that causes you to seek refuge?

  • How do you balance seeking practical advice with trusting in God’s providence?

  • Do you believe your inheritance is truly secure in the Lord?

Prayer

Lord, we admit that the events of our time make us fearful about the future. Forgive us for placing our trust in other gods. In all areas of our life, we ask for your wisdom and the guidance of the Spirit. May our priorities and decisions reflect the values of your kingdom. You are our refuge and strength, and we ask for your grace and blessing in all things. Amen.
