Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:1-2 NIV
As we prepare to close the chapter on 2025, don’t rush past these final days. Before stepping into a new year, pause and take time to look back—with gratitude, honesty, and prayer. One powerful way to do this is through a spiritual practice rooted in Ignatian spirituality called the Examen. It’s a simple yet profound rhythm of prayerful reflection that helps us notice God’s presence, activity, and invitations in our daily lives. While it’s often practiced at the end of each day, it can also serve as a meaningful way to review the entire year. In the quiet moments before the calendar turns, consider using the following questions as a spiritual Examen of your year.
REFLECT — Look back with honesty and gratitude
• Where did I experience God’s goodness, provision, or protection?
• What relationships, moments, or experiences brought joy?
• What circumstances challenged or stretched my faith?
• In what areas of my life would I like a “do-over”?
REPENT — Turn away from what hinders spiritual growth
• What attitudes or choices drew me away from God this past year?
• How have I allowed myself to be conformed to the world?
• Where do I need a change of direction in my life?
• What might I need to leave behind to follow Jesus in the year ahead?
RENEW — Commit to practices that cultivate spiritual growth
• How can I create new spiritual algorithms for the year ahead?
• What practices will keep me rooted in His presence day by day?
• How might I serve others in the coming year?
• What relationships should I invest in for deeper spiritual growth?
